National Guard on standby

National Guard units across the state, including the 778th Maintenance Unit in Monroeville, have been placed on hurricane alert, according to Gary Hart, the 778th’s Ranking Non Commissioned Officer (NCO).
Hart said the 778th was in Anniston last Friday on its annual two-week training when it received orders to return to Monroeville and prepare for possible hurricane relief duty in Louisiana.
He said the decision was made earlier this week not to deploy the unit to Louisiana, but about half the unit’s 32 soldiers, will remain at the Armory in Monroeville. He said the unit will spend the remainder of this week making sure the equipment and vehicles are ready to be deployed if needed after Hurricane Hannah or tropical storms Ike and Josephine make landfall.
