Tigers get three wins
Monroe County High’s Tigers picked up three wins over the past week, including a 63-62 victory over Clarke County last Tuesday night on a last-second lay up.
Jonathan Johnson hit the lay up as time expired after hauling in a court-length pass from JoDarius Boykin with 1.3 seconds left. Johnson finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals to lead the Tigers.

City sales tax up in December
After getting a better sales tax report for December, the Monroeville City Council agreed not to consider further reductions in operating costs during Tuesday night’s work session in the council chambers at City Hall.
Through the first quarter revenue was down 11 percent, but a rebound in the sales tax collection for December reduced the total revenue difference from 11 to 7 percent, according to City Clerk Toni McKelvey. MORE
 
Sen. Shelby addresses concerns
U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, told citizens and elected officials in a public meeting Saturday in Monroeville he will continue to do what he believes is the right thing to do during the 111th congressional session.
Shelby met with about 25 constituents at the Courthouse Café on West Claiborne and replied to questions concerning the economy, the war of terrorism, healthcare costs and more. MORE
 
Dollar General wants to build in Excel on Alabama Hwy. 136
At their meeting Monday night, the Excel Planning Commission accepted an application to rezone a piece of property for the proposed site of a Dollar General store, and a public hearing is set for Feb. 18.

Local veterinary clinics are offering an additional 10 percent off spay and neuter surgeries during Spay/Neuter Month, which continues through Feb. 28.
 
Turner: Bring terror trials to Monroeville
Monroeville City Councilwoman presented an idea to her fellow council members and Mayor Mike Kennedy Tuesday night that she believes would boost the local economy.
During the council meeting at City Hall, District 3 Councilwoman Barbara Turner suggested the city contact President Barack Obama and let him know if he could not hold the terrorists’ trials in New York, Monroeville would be glad to allow the trials to be held here. MORE
